A Little Portugal, Toronto Spring Cleanup in the Front and Backyards

Small Property, Lots of Leaves

On the map, this property in Toronto's Little Portugal neighbourhood has a small footprint so I thought the spring cleanup would take less time than usual. Wrong! When several mature trees had shed their leaves last autumn and no one removed them from the gardens for over 5 months, there was a lot of heavy lifting involved with all these matted leaves.

Here are some "before" and "after" pictures of this spring cleanup. These work requests are coming in strong and fast and it's not even May yet. Major tasks involved in this particular cleanup involved raking up the thick mat of old autumn 2020 maple leaves and weeding in order to get the gardens ready for newly ordered perennials.

A Riverdale 2020 Spring Cleanup

There's a Patio and Garden Somewhere Under All these Leaves!

We all lead busy lives and for many homeowners (lucky for me), cleaning up the various garden areas isn't a priority. I just think of it as job security!

This post goes over a recent spring cleanup in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood. Or, rather, a delayed fall 2019 tidy up since the bulk of the work involved raking up last autumn's leaves.

Here are some pictures from the backyard: As you can see, nothing intricate, most of the job involved scraping up the wet and matted maple leaves which were becoming nice leaf compost.

This back raised garden area was full of weed tree saplings which germinated from nearby Tree of Heaven and maple trees.

The front area shown below had a few weeds but pruning the overgrown spirea and yew shrubs near the front steps was the priority:

My cordless electric leaf blower came in very handy in cleaning up the newly exposed flagstone.

Greektown Spring Garden Cleanup

Another Toronto Spring Cleanup on the Danforth? Opa!

It's still May so I have no hesitation showing you more spring cleanup projects for 2019!

Today's post brings us to the bustling neighbourhood of Greektown near "the Danforth", a main street on which many Greek restaurants are clustered. Getting to this client's place usually involves smelling the delicious odours of grilled souvlaki rather than flowering trees or shrubs!

Brian, the client, usually hires me twice a year to a) tidy up and plant annuals in the spring and b) rake up the fall leaves. The front and back areas are typically small (for this neighbourhood) so cleaning things up and transplanting wasn't onerous.

You may notice the large bare spot to the left of the picture above. A huge silver maple was taken down a few months ago and its trunk occupied that bare patch which is along the property line. Brian now is dealing with the owner next door, an absentee landlord, to see if the boulder retaining wall can be extended. During a heavy rainfall, lots of water gushes down that bare slope but since most of exposed area (maybe 75%) is the neighbour's property, my client can only do so much.

A Leaside Toronto Spring Cleanup

A (Very) Small Garden Spring Cleanup in Leaside

It's the start of another busy work season and I'm kept on my toes with spring cleanup requests. This post covers a small yard tidy-up in the Leaside neighbourhood of Toronto.

Nothing too elaborate or complicated with this visit: cutting down a medium-sized clump of ornamental grass ( Miscanthus sinensis ), removing diseased Hellebore leaves, cutting back the three Jackmanii clematis and raking out the beds the few remaining maple leaves from last autumn.

The biggest drama occurred when the client locked herself out of her house as we went about the gardens when I first arrived. Luckily, she had a spare key lying outside just for this situation!
