Early fall Baby Point garden clean up in Toronto

Removing garlic mustard, maple saplings, wild grape vines and more from a west end Toronto garden

Lesley and Alan, homeowners of this Baby Point area garden in Toronto, hired me to weed and prune the backyard garden bed that overlooks a ravine. And, yes, the before photos show the ravine trying to reclaim the bed!

This extensive clean up of the large backyard bed, side garden and two front rock gardens took about 10 hours, filled 20 yard waste bags, and left 4 large bundles of twigs and branches.

Prominent weeds include garlic mustard (infesting the entire back bed), maple seedlings and saplings, goldenrod and an out of control wild grape vine.

Richard and Nadia are putting their house on the market and hired me to weed and mulch the front garden to make it presentable to potential buyers. The area is partly a raised bed around a mature linden tree and wraps around the side going to the backyard.

The garden was full of maple saplings, creeping thistle, goldenrod, and petty spurge. After weeding the garden, I applied a layer of mulch to reduce weeding and improve the overall appearance. 

The three garden mums were my idea!

Bedford Park garden clean up

A late summer garden clean-up in the mid-town Toronto neighbourhood of Bedford Park.

It's early September and I was hired by Sharon to weed her back yard garden beds.

 In the following pictures, you'll see a wonderful assortment of mature weeds "native" to Toronto! These include Creeping Thistle (Cirsium arvense), Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album), Ragweed (Ambrosia spp.), Yellow Nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), Goldenrod (Solidago)  and some type of mint creeping from the neighbour's yard.


Besides hauling out the 10 yard waste bags, I was amazed at how the hostas actually survived under all the weeds. Now these are tough perennials!

Fall blooming perennials in Toronto: early autumn bloomers

September in Toronto is lovely. It usually still feels like summer with temperatures in the mid to low 20 celsius range and little humidity. And my birthday is coming up in a few weeks, but I digress!

The stars in the perennial garden are from the Asteraceae and Malvaceae families but others can join in as well. Here are some pictures of early autumn bloomers hardy to zone 5 Toronto. There's a mixture of mainly perennials, some annuals, some natives.
